Lysine is not only the first limiting amino acid and the second most expensive nutrient in diets for young pigs, but it also determines the concentrations of the other essential amino acids through the concept of ideal protein balance. Today, as we continue to reduce dietary protein concentrations because of animal and environmental concerns, the use of synthetic amino acids in increasing and thus accurate lysine requirements estimates are becoming even more crucial in formulating adequate diets
