In a somewhat unusual turn of events, the organising committee for the 2028 International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) has chosen to postpone the organisation of the event in Minneapolis, MN, United States, from 2028 to 2030.
Most likely the 2028 edition of the biennial global veterinary congress will now be held in Madrid, Spain. That message could be heard repeatedly at a recently held veterinary congress, the European Symposium for Porcine Health Management (ESPHM), held 13–15 May in Florence, Italy.
If confirmed at the upcoming edition of the global pig veterinary congress, set for 16–19 June in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the Madrid edition of IPVS will be a co-host for both the European and the global veterinary pig congresses. Combining the European and the global swine veterinary events has been happening before in 2016 (Dublin, Ireland) and 2024 (Leipzig, Germany).
In a recent news release by the University of Minnesota, it was said that ‘the committee determined that shifting the US hosting opportunity to 2030 would better accommodate the needs of all attendees’.
Further explanation was not given in the news release, but again at ESPHM in Florence, Italy, Pig Progress heard many point to the current political background in the USA. Geographically, the Minneapolis congress would be an ideal opportunity for many swine veterinarians from all over the Americas to attend. It is feared, however, that in the current political context, many potential delegates hailing from south of the US may not be too tempted to embark on a plane to the US.
Postponing the Minneapolis event to 2030 may well overcome that problem. As there are presidential elections in 2028, the US political context might have changed in 2030, which could lead to more favourable travelling perspectives for both swine veterinarians from all over the Americas – as well as the event organisers.
In the news release, Dr Cesar Corzo, chair of the (now) IPVS 2030 organising committee, said, “We are committed to developing a robust scientific programme for IPVS 2030 and providing an enriching environment for congress participants. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Minneapolis in 2030.”
The 2030 event will mark the first time in almost 30 years that the biennial congress will be held in the United States.
