Farm visit: Sows as the latest addition to a family farm

Nicolas de Wilde (40) owns De Wilde Farm, located in Cortil-Noirmont, Belgium. This is a mixed farm with pigs, beef cattle and arable farming. With regard to pigs, the farm has a 135 sow farrow-to-finish facility, working on a 5-week system with 4 production groups. De Wilde will breed his own sows. The farm uses genetics from Denmark and a Piétrain terminal sire from the breeding organisation Axiom. De Wilde is a semi-self-mixer. He grinds and mixes grain and corn from his own land to feed the pigs. In addition, the farm has 20 Limousin cattle and 50 ha of arable land. Photos: Twan Wiermans
Pig producer Nicolas De Wilde is located in the French-speaking part of Belgium – traditionally not a place of pig production. For him, recently, a new chapter began, as he started producing his own piglets. He is producing for the local market through his cooperative, using feed from his own land.
