At weaning dietary zinc oxide is used to combat diarrhoea which occurs as the intestinal ?microbiota changes. With associations to ?antibiotic resistance and the development of multi-resistant E. coli strains, the effect of zinc deserves closer examination. Molecular methods have shown that the intestinal microbiota of pigs consists of dozens of different bacterial groups that include hundreds of species, which split into even more bacterial strains.
