From 1 January 2006, the use of antibiotic growth promoters in pig feed will be banned in the EU. In Denmark, growth promoters were already withdrawn from the feed in 1999; the prevalence of certain diseases, especially E. coli and Lawsonia, subsequently increased and resulted in an increased use of therapeutic antibiotics.
