Antimicrobial peptides, which are present in the gut, are the natural defensins of the animal. Current research is working on exploiting these peptides to target harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella without the need for in-feed antibiotics. At the first International Nutritional Congress in Belgium, Hans Snel and Denise Kelly explained the possibilities for host defence.
