African Swine Fever (ASF) has emerged in a different district (comarca) around Barcelona, i.e. Baix Llobregat. The latest update shows outbreaks near the town of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, about 7 km south of known cases.

New cases, found on 11 February, were reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) this week. In total, 6 carcasses were found there, close to the village of Sant Feliu de Llobregat. Maps distributed by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) appear to give more details than the updates at WOAH, where outbreak updates appear to be clustered.

MAPA information shows that the virus has now been found in 7 municipalities, namely Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Terrassa, Rubí, Molins de Rei and Sant Feliu de Llobregat.

Expansion of the inner zone

Spanish authorities have expanded the restricted area (inner zone) due to new cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) into a southern direction.

The ministry also stated that the wild boar population is to be further reduced. The Spanish are relying on traps and traditional hunting with firearms. They are also reinforcing existing fences and other barriers.
