Inflammation is a complicated physiological process in response to various immune stimuli. This physiological reaction can become detrimental when the response is prolonged and dysregulated called “chronic inflammation”. A notable feature of chronic inflammation is its high energetic cost. It is well established that the chronic (low-grade) inflammatory response in the intestine, results in the disruption of digestive function, nutritional malabsorption, and consequently growth retardation.
