The pig sector in Switzerland has been struggling with overcapacity for years. To tackle that problem structurally, industry organisation Suisseporc has proposed a voluntary reduction in the number of sows. This would be financed through a levy on pigs sent for slaughter. The plan is strongly supported by meat organisation Proviande. However, not all pig farmers agree with it. Switzerland is not a major pig-producing country.
