Streptococcus suis infections are complicated by the fact that there are many different serotypes and strains commonly present in the tonsils and nasal cavities of pigs. It is important to carry out epidemiological studies with the particular strain responsible for the observed clinical cases. New, powerful molecular techniques to compare different S. suis strains of the same serotype will very soon contribute to a better understanding of the disease.
