FMD Greece: 12 more farms infected; no pigs involved
The battle against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) continues in Greece, with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reporting a further 12 outbreaks in the country. So far, no outbreaks have involved any pigs.
Late March 2026, the total number of outbreaks in Pelopi, the North Aegean Region in Greece, stood at 5. The WOAH now reports a further 12 outbreaks. The new outbreaks are located in Pelopi, Lesvos and Napis.
In the regions reporting the new outbreaks, the numbers are as follows:
Lesvos
- Sheep/goat farm – 210 susceptible and 19 confirmed cases
- Cattle/sheep farm – 199 susceptible (190 sheep and 9 cattle) and 11 confirmed cases
- Cattle/sheep/goats – 331 susceptible (297 sheep/goats and 34 cattle) and 25 confirmed cases
- Sheep farm – 254 susceptible and 16 confirmed cases
- Sheep farm – 227 susceptible and 15 confirmed cases
Napis
- Cattle/sheep farm – 204 (202 sheep and 2 cattle) susceptible and 21 confirmed cases
Pelopi
- Cattle/ sheep farm – 48 susceptible (43 sheep and 5 cattle) and 5 confirmed cases
- Sheep farm – 94 susceptible and 14 confirmed cases
- Sheep farm – 272 susceptible and 19 confirmed cases
- Cattle/sheep farm – 121 susceptible (120 sheep and 1 cattle) and 12 confirmed cases
- Cattle/ sheep farm – 216 susceptible (203 sheep and 13 cattle) and 11 confirmed cases
- Sheep/goat farm – 198 susceptible and 22 confirmed cases
The serotype in Greece is confirmed as SAT-1, with a total number of outbreaks at 17, which equates to 3,909 susceptible animals (sheep/cattle and goats) and 282 cases in total in the country to date (30 March).
